PATEK PHILIPPE GENEVE AUCTION 25.02.2010 19HOO - HOTEL RITZ - LISBOA

In order to mark and celebrate David Rosas 25th anniversary, Patek Philippe has accepted the challenge of creating a unique piece inspired in Portugal. The outcome is the dome table-clock Ref. 1577 “Portugal” in cloisonné enamel, inspired in Portugal’s Great Discoveries. This table-clock will be auctioned, and all profits will be donated to charity institution “Terra dos Sonhos”. The future owner of this work of art will not only receive a unique Patek Philippe table-clock, but will also have the chance to help those in need to make their dreams come true. Patek Philippe timepieces display traditional decorative arts in casemaking, enameling, engraving and gem-setting. The supreme quality of these arts has distinguished the best Geneva watches for more than 400 years.

Today a handful of specialists still master these technically difficult and unforgiving crafts to keep the tradition alive at Patek Philippe. Their work is acknowledged as equal to the great masters of the Geneva school. Patek Philippe’s Dome table-clocks are decorated in cloisonné enamels. In this technique the powdered colored enamel is laid in partitions made of gold ribbon or wire, which form the outlines of the picture. Up to 20 meters of 22-carat gold ribbon is used to form the partitions in which the enamel colors are applied. Interesting color effects can be achieved by blending enamels in the partitions. As with all enamel work, it is vitrified in an oven.

A counter-enamel is laid inside the curved panels of the case to prevent the metal warping in the oven and cracking the enamel. This Ref. 1577 dome table-clock in cloisonné enamel and delicate lettering in enamel paint, is a unique piece on the theme of Portugal’s Great Discoveries. The three curved side panels display an ancient map of the World illustrating Portuguese territories at the time of the signature of the Tordesilhas Treaty in 1494. The Equator, the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and the Tordesilhas Meridian are outlined in gold ribbon. The dome shows a 1715 map of the North Pole where the Pole area, the 83rd Parallel and the Arctic Circle are outlined in gold ribbon. The dial panels feature a compass rose. The surface at the bottom of the dial is engraved with the words: “Portugal”, Peça Única, 25º Aniversário da David Rosas.
